With the turning of the leaves, it’s time to think about removing your Kasco fountains and surface aerators for winter. If you are a do-it-yourselfer, this is the ideal time to do some basic, routine maintenance. These simple steps will save you time, money, and help ensure another great season next year.
Routine Cleaning
Cleaning is one of the most essential maintenance items and is actually very easy when the unit is first removed from the water. When wet, it usually only takes a scrub brush and some elbow grease to remove any organic or mineral deposits from the motor housing, float, and prop/fountain housing area. In cases of stubborn deposits, you may need to use a pressure washer or a cleaning product, like a biodegradable descaling solution. Keeping the unit clean is critical for proper cooling and long life and it is infinitely easier to clean when it is first removed rather than letting the material dry.
Check the Sacrificial Anode
Another maintenance item is checking and replacing the sacrificial anode if corroded. The anode is located just below the prop on all Kasco units besides 1/4HP. This anode protects the unit from corrosion. When it reaches roughly ½ the original size and/or is visibly corroded, it is time to replace it. A 9/64” long handled Allen Wrench should be used to loosen the screws in the anode. You can, but do not have to, remove the prop to do this. Simply reinstall the new anode and tighten on the shaft. For newer units that have the flinger disk, care should be taken not to move the disc as spacing is precise. Simply tighten the anode directly above the flinger so the zinc and flinger are touching. On older style units, place the zinc roughly 1/8 in. above the motor top.
Check the Power Cord
After the unit is removed from the water and unplugged, inspect the power cord for damage to the plug from other equipment or wild life. Any visible damage to the insulation would lead us to recommend replacing the cord.
Replace Seal, Oil and Bearings
Finally, every 3 years of service, it is recommended that you have a seal, oil, and bearing change performed on the unit.
After maintenance is complete, simply bring the unit indoors and store upside down or on its side to ensure good oil/seal contact to prevent any drying. Storage areas do not need to be room temperature, but it is suggested to be above freezing. These simple steps will save you time next spring and ensure another year of great service and reliability.
